“Love knows not its own depth until the hour of separation”
– Kahlil Gibran, The Prophet
The U.S. Government has separated nearly 2000 children from their parents in less than six weeks under Trump’s new “zero tolerance” policy for immigrants seeking asylum in the United States. The children are detained in inhuman environments of oversized cages without family, friends, or guardians to care for or comfort them, without any promise that they will even ever see them again. This event in our history is one that I feel many of us believed had passed. We hoped that the days of ripping apart families and selling African Americans into slavery were over. We convinced ourselves that the slaughtering, torture, and separating of twelve million Native Americans was a stain on our ancestry but that it was a time in our history books. We lied to ourselves by seeing pictures of Jews behind barbed wire fencing stripped of their dignity, humanity, and lives and saying, “That could never happen again.”
But here we are. Reliving it.
I have been silent for days about the events happening at the border. As a mother, a spiritual being, a HUMAN being (cause that’s all you should have to be to know this is wrong) and a spiritual teacher, I have lacked the words or clarity to comment in a way that I felt would bring justice to this tragedy.
I have prayed and asked to see the spiritual solution and to be given guidance on how to handle these horrifying events and after days of listening I have finally been guided with not only what to do, but also with what to say, and despite the fear I have to share these words, I must do so.
The people who are doing this and allowing this to happen have been consumed by evil, but they are not evil. They are children of God who have been seduced by fear and allowed it to reign over their thoughts and actions, but they have the Spirit of God within them. They have been led astray, they are not thinking with their hearts, they are being fueled by hate. The hate that is being projected toward them is only fueling their hatred and fear and feeding the evil that they have succumb to. It is easy to feel hatred, anger, and animosity toward these lawmakers and government officials, but your hatred is being ingested by the mouth of madness and is creating a stronger enemy. While it is triggering to watch this happen you must not allow your triggers to become the consciousness from which you operate. You must love your neighbor, and while that may seem impossible GOD LOVES THE LAWMAKERS WHO ARE COMMITTING THESE CRIMES.
Let that sink in.
It doesn’t mean they are right or justifiable in their actions, but as long as God loves them then so will I.
But how?! How dare I love someone that is hurting innocent children?!
I’m not going to lie, it’s difficult. It’s difficult because I look at my own children and feel sick to my stomach at the thought that someone would hurt them or take them away. I can’t imagine the fear, the pain, or the trauma these people are experiencing. But God gave us his grace, his unmerited favor, to each and everyone of us. It is not earned nor can it be taken. God loves us each regardless of our actions, and as a spiritual being who is committed to the highest level of spirituality and Christ Consciousness, I will love everyone too.
I was afraid to share these words because I know so many people will feel the anger, hurt and frustration that our ego wants us to remain in, but when I committed to do God’s work I knew I might make some enemies. The “spiritual” thing to do isn’t always the most favorable or politically correct, but Truth is truth. We cannot make it work for us only in our favor. We have to stand in it even when it hurts, when it’s triggering, and when it feels like the world is on fire.
This doesn’t mean we shouldn’t donate, give money, give help, or a hand to anyone and everyone of these families. Please do, please make the calls to the lawmakers. Donate to the families who need lawyers. This is a natural world and we have to still participate in this world. But when we pray for these children and their families we should also be praying for the hearts and spirits of the perpetrators.
I surrendered my life to God and promised to always do everything in my power to walk the Christ path and follow in the footsteps of Jesus. Well friends, I can say with certainty that Jesus would not give up on these lawmakers. I know Jesus would love them just the same as the children and families who are being wronged. He wouldn’t yell at them or scream. He wouldn’t post hateful comments about them on Facebook or curse obscenities at the television screen. He would see the God within them, the divine light that no one else sees and he would love them .
So that is what I will do.
Is that difficult?
That’s how I know it’s the path of God.
It’s easy to hate, be afraid, point fingers, cast judgement. But it’s EXTREMELY difficult to do the spiritual thing when no one else will or when it appears so sad and horrible that you have to be shown a spiritual solution.
So what is the spiritual solution to this human problem?
Pray for everyone.
Pray for the children being stolen from their parents. Pray that they find peace, comfort and a quick resolution to this painful situation.
Pray for the parents, families, and relatives who are terrified they may never see their loved ones again. Pray for their amnesty, shelter, and protection.
And last but not least…
Pray for the lawmakers, border patrol, officers, and government officials who are so blinded by fear and hate that they have lost their minds. Pray for their spirit, their heart, THEIR CHRIST that appears to be gone but is only hidden. Pray that they see the Christ in themselves and these families. That they feel the oneness that connects us all and that the spirits of evil are lifted from them. Pray that they know God like they have never know Him before and that they reflect that Godliness back into the world.
Then forgive them because they know not what they do.
If you are a spiritual person, this is what is required of you to take spiritual action. You will never solve this tragedy by feeding the flames of hate.
How do I know?
Because those flames of hate have been burning through our entire civilization. The only way to suffocate the flames is through love, and the ultimate act of love is to pray for those we feel don’t deserve it.
